How Do We Get There? If you don't have your own boat, there are several great boat charter companies that will take you to the islands. They will also feed you, entertain you, or let you get off the boat and to go camping, hiking or relaxing on the beaches. We went with a charter company in August, 2005, and had a great time.
What Will We See There? You will see an abundance of sea life. We saw a shark, a whale, numerous fishes while we snorkeled, THE MOST remarkable clear water, lots of birds, and wonderful beaches with no one on them. If you hike on the islands, you may see historic homes and ranches, elk, and open space as far as you can see. There are also marine mammal rookeries on some of the islands. It is like going back in time in California 200 years. When you go on a charter boat with a guide, you might learn about the "Rancho Period" of the islands, the early inhabitants of the islands (going back some 13,000 year) water canyons, endemic Torrey Pines Forest, sand dunes, caves, the old sheep ranchs, native plants, the Chumash chert mines, and endemic island scrub jays. Take a look at the PHOTOS that we took on our trip!
What Should We Bring? The boats normally provide blankets in the bunks. Bring your own sheets and pillows. It's normally fairly warm in the bunk area. If you decide to camp, you'll need to bring just about everything. There are no motor vehicles for the general public on the islands, so you will be "hoofing it" to the campsite. That means backpacks or coolers on wheels.
